Hello,
I'm Devin Smith I am 25 years old and am pretty new to
the Internet.
This page is all about me and what I like. My Step dad
(Mark) put this page
together so my friends can find out more about me.
I
was born neurologically and visually handicapped. My mom
was a school teacher while she was pregnant with me and
a student came to school with Rubella.
We
think that it may have contributed to my neurological
problems. At first when I was born they gave me too much
oxygen because I needed it and it burst the blood
vessels on the backs of my eyes. This created scar tissue
that causes my blind spots.
No
one really knows how I see because it changes all the
time caused by my scar tissue moving on the backs of my
eyes. I can't really tell anyone how I see since I've
never seen any other way. This is frustrating for me as
well as my parents and the doctors.
I
will do my best to try to tell you my whole life story
here. It'll take a few pages but hey you never know, it
could be very interesting to you. :^)
Read on if you dare.
Currently
I live in Kalamazoo MI with my bud Gabe, he's also blind.
I met him at the Commission for the Blind and we've been
friends ever since. I'm hoping that the two of us living
together can over come many of our own individual short
comings and work well together. Gabe is better with Brail
and stuff like that than I am because of my neuro issues.
I see a tiny bit more than Gabe so I can help him with
that. I think we work pretty well together so far and
it's been fun having someone like me around all the time.
We've both worked in Kazoo at Midwest Blind Industries
making things for the soldiers overseas.
Someday,
the doctors say when medicine gets the point of Star Trek's
Technology
they might be able to cure me or Gabe so we can see correctly
and possibly fix my neurological problems. In the mean
time wejust do the best we can and have my parents and
my sister help me in any way they can. If I seem a bit
frustrated or quiet it's because it is very difficult
to adopt to my surroundings and move around as well as
a fully sighted person.
Don't
feel sorry for me because I have a good life, I have a
good family and they love me. Gabe and I get around pretty
well really and we live in a town that is empathetic to
blind people like us. Kalamazoo has a large blind community
anyway plus the Commission is here as well.
Check
out this picture of me dressed up as the Notre Dame Leprechaun.
My aunt and uncle took me to a ND game dressed like this
and lot's of people thought I was the real mascot for
ND. I was pretty cool several people took their picture
with me. I think I'm going to have Mark help me write
to ND and see if they'll make me the mascot's mascot.

I also love video games, sports, movies and music.
I have a Sony Playstation (click below to check out Sony's
way cool site)
My
sister Natalie has my old Atari
Jaguar and my old Nintendo. We love to play games together
and of course we fight just like normal brothers and sisters
do.
I'm
a huge Chicago Bulls fan and you can get to their site
by
clicking on the Bulls animated log below.

I'm
also a HUGE hockey fan and my favorite team is the Detroit
Red Wings.

I
like to listen to recorded books from the Library of Congress's
Recordings for
the Blind and Physically Handicapped. If you want more
information on them
click on the link below. They give out free stuff to people
like me who need it.
