


Here you can see the world's first CE-certified, 3D-printed lifting tool made by Wärtsilä with a Markforged 3D printer! The lifting tool helps with the maintenance of engines on assembly lines worldwide and can lift a whopping 960 kg (with a safety factor of 4)! This is manufacturing redefined.


The original lifting tool (L) was made of solid steel and weighed 75% more than the 3D printed replacement part (R).
As the lifting tool can be produced using additive manufacturing, shipping time is eliminated and storage requirements are reduced. It is less expensive than conventional single tools made for production purposes, much lighter and more compact, and facilitates transportation to service engines on commercial vessels. By making it easy to create specific tools for pilot projects, the new tool will speed up the introduction of new products and reduce time to market.
Thanks to Markforged's continuous fiber technology, the component is strong enough to lift the piston and cylinder of a Wärtsilä 26 engine with a working load of up to 960 kg.
