Why are holes always round?

SOLIDWORKS offers a Hole Wizard to assist designers in creating standard-compliant holes. But in the age of additive manufacturing, round holes may not always be necessary or practical.

Why are holes actually round?

  • Because the drill is round
  • Because the screws are round
  • Because DIN wants it that way
  • With 3D printing, you don’t have or need a drill.

 

What are holes in components needed for?

  • For screws, i.e. for joining parts
    • there are other ways to join
  • For weight loss
    • The honeycomb structure inside the component allows this without additional holes
  • As a flow for a wide variety of media
    • this does not have to be round
