We&#039;re upgrading&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/store.3dr.com\/products\/IRIS\">IRIS+<\/a>&nbsp;quadcopter from&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/3dr.com\/\">3DRobotics<\/a>&nbsp;with carbon fiber-reinforced 3D printed components that are both lighter and stronger than the original parts, to see how high we can push the limits of performance. This isn&#039;t the first time Markforged parts have helped a carbon fiber drone fly \u2014 the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/markforged.com\/snotbot\/\">Snotbot research project<\/a>&nbsp;used Kevlar-reinforced landing gear and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/markforged.com\/part-of-the-week-samrats-quadcopter-december-4-2015\/\">one of our engineers printed a racing drone<\/a>\u2014 but we&#039;re excited about this project because this drone is large enough for the carbon fiber-reinforced parts to gain a significant strength advantage over pure plastics. These days, there are a plethora of phenomenal quadcopters on the market at affordable prices, but many models aren&#039;t designed well for 3D printing. Many models use an injection molded outer casing that also serves as the superstructure of the drone itself \u2014 DJI&#039;s Phantom line is probably the best-known example of this. While this type of design has allowed drones to become extremely affordable \u2014 injection molded parts are insanely cheap in large volumes \u2014 the shell-type structure requires a lot of support material to print (read: 3+ day print times) and it can&#039;t take advantage of that&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/markforged.com\/high-strength-3d-printing-how-to-use-isotropic-fill-part-2\/\">sandwich panel construction<\/a>that Markforged printers utilize to make parts with extremely high strength-to-weight ratios.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1365\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mark3d.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/image-16.png\" alt=\"image-16\" width=\"800\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mark3d.com\/de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/image-16-200x100.png 200w, https:\/\/www.mark3d.com\/de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/image-16-300x150.png 300w, https:\/\/www.mark3d.com\/de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/image-16-400x200.png 400w, https:\/\/www.mark3d.com\/de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/image-16-600x300.png 600w, https:\/\/www.mark3d.com\/de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/image-16-768x384.png 768w, https:\/\/www.mark3d.com\/de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/image-16.png 800w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><i>The DJI Phantom 4 is a great drone, but its injection-molded outer shell isn&#039;t ideal for upgrading with 3D printing (source:&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.dji.com\/\">DJI<\/a>)<\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The IRIS+ open source announcement couldn&#039;t have come at a more perfect time, and we&#039;ve been busy testing printing parts since. You may have noticed a sneak peek of the carbon fiber-reinforced drone arms in our previous posts on sandwich panel construction or&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/markforged.com\/mmf-2-stronger-threads-with-threaded-inserts\/\">adding threaded inserts to 3D printed parts<\/a>&nbsp;earlier this month.
