The stock go kart steering wheel meets these requirements by being primarily constructed from stamped sheet steel for strength and stiffness and encased with a rubber overmold for comfort. I decided to take inspiration from a number of Formula 1 steering wheels, dropping the circular shape of the original wheel for a more oblong profile.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1350\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mark3d.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/steering-wheel-turn1.gif\" alt=\"steering-wheel-turn1\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" \/><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_7617\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\">\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>A first pass at designing a steering wheel for the go kart<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">With my first pass modeled in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.onshape.com\/\">OnShape<\/a>, it was off the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/markforged.com\/mark-two\/\">Mark Two<\/a>! A couple hours later, I learned that I had dramatically misjudged the shape of my own hands. With my new steering wheel in in front of me, I found it was cramped and awkward to hold. Among many small tweaks, I thickened the handles and removed protrusions that had cramped my fingers. For stiffness, I used Eiger\u2019s isotropic fiber fill to produce planes of fiber that specifically resist twisting loads.
