Hollywood Propmaster [Video] 3D Printing with Markforged

Thingergy is one of the most in-demand Hollywood prop shops in the industry, and has worked on countless prestigious projects including Star Wars: Kenobi, The Umbrella Academy, Stranger Things, Westworld, and more.

In this 6 minute video, self-titled “Big Cheese” at Thingergy Frank Ippolito shows off some of the incredible props that he and his team have created using Markforged 3D printers. You’re guaranteed to recognise some of these 3D printed props!

Flexible Design, Flexible Components

“3D Designing and 3D Printing with the Markforged machines makes it so much easier, and so much nicer” – Frank Ippolito

Thanks to Frank and his team’s work, Markforged 3D printed props have appeared in countless high budget films and series.

This isn’t all however; Frank has been able to create more “loan” props that are sent out on a temporary basis to customers. Traditionally this was a risky thing to do, as props represent a great deal of time and craftsmanship and can be fragile.

“Not to sound corny or anything, but one of the only prints we’ll actually send out onto set comes off of the Markforged machines. Like, we won’t send any of our other stuff out as a general use prop just because these things are more durable.”

In the case of the helmet in the video, Thingergy were able to print flexible parts in TPU. Historically, the parts would need to have a mould created before casting in rubber; a far more complex and intensive process.

Yet again, Markforged’s industrial strength materials have not only survived the rigors of regular use, but have exceeded expectations in strength and durability.

Where could you use strength like this in your work?

Stronger than Aluminium

For years, a compromise between strength, delivery time and cost had to be accepted. This can now easily be avoided!
