Over the past two years, there\u2019s been a sharp rise in the prevalence of functional 3D printed parts showing up in our employees\u2019 lives \u2013 from toothbrush and pen holders, to replacement Kevlar door hinges (we\u2019re not totally sure how unnamed parties lost a door hinge\u2026), and a GPS mount for road bicycle handlebars to name just a few. It\u2019s incredibly easy to make custom, high-strength, one-off reinforced components with a Mark Two 3D printer, and with a large in-house printer farm continuously requiring new parts to test the performance of our machines, it\u2019s common to see your design materialize rapidly.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">This was the case when Maggie, one of our mechanical engineers, wanted to upgrade her&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pannier\">bicycle pannier<\/a>&nbsp;to make it easier to transport. Panniers are (generally waterproof) bags that mount on either side of the front or rear wheels of a bicycle, as you can see in the image below. Panniers are also a common sight around the Markforged offices \u2013 a significant portion of our office bikes to work and they\u2019re a great solution to transporting gear to and from the office.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1277\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mark3d.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/image-5.png\" alt=\"image-5\" width=\"588\" height=\"364\"><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em>Touring bike with front, rear and handlebar panniers mounted (source:&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/bicycletouringpro.com\/\">BicycleTouringPro.com<\/a>)<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Panniers sometimes have backpack or over-the-shoulder straps, but not often, and Maggie found it unwieldy to lug her fully loaded pannier around when she was transporting it off her bicycle. Undeterred, she decided to design a solution that would take advantage of both the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/markforged.com\/materials\/data-sheet\/\">high tensile strength<\/a>&nbsp;of our&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/markforged.com\/materials\/\">Kevlar CFF filament<\/a>, and the print-and-forget reliability of the Mark Two. This allowed her to quickly iterate through a series of functional designs before producing two finished high strength shoulder strap adapters with minimal impact on her busy engineering schedule (just planning and running nearly the entirety of print testing of our new&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/markforged.com\/introducing-markforged-high-temperature-materials\/\">HSHT Fiberglass<\/a>&nbsp;composite filament, no big deal!).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1277\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mark3d.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/MG_3007-500x333.jpg\" alt=\"MG_3007-500x333\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\"><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em>Fast, iterative design \u2013 a series of (extremely) rapid prototypes as Maggie evolved the adapter to its final form (right)<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The adapter allowed an off-the-shelf duffel bag shoulder strap to be attached to the plastic clips which normally hold the pannier onto a steel bicycle rack on the rear of the bike. The pannier clips were the perfect mounting point for adding a shoulder strap but the strap itself terminated in its own set of plastic clips which couldn\u2019t interface with the pannier at an angle that was comfortable to wear the bag. It was clear to Maggie that an adapter would be necessary to get this project moving.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1279\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mark3d.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/image-6-273x500.png\" alt=\"image-6-273x500\" width=\"273\" height=\"500\"><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em>Up close view of the Kevlar-reinforced adapter interfacing with the pannier clip that normally attaches the bag to a bicycle rack<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The first iteration was made with the rough dimensions of the mounting points of both the pannier and shoulder strap clips. It was functional, but the round hole for mounting the shoulder strap was too thick and the strap\u2019s clip couldn\u2019t move smoothly, which made for awkward positioning when carrying the bag.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mark3d.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/image-7-440x500.png\" alt=\"image-7-440x500\" width=\"440\" height=\"500\"><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em>The initial prototype in fiberglass<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">In the second iteration, Maggie reduced the size of the strap clip hole and redesigned the overall adapter body to have a slimmer, sleeker design that fit better with the design aesthetic of the bag and strap. With one click, she updated the STL file to be sliced, using the \u2018Update STL\u2019 button in Eiger (highlighted in red in the image below). She also switched the fiber type to Kevlar, because it is able to retain more of its tensile strength than fiberglass or carbon fiber, in the event that an overloaded bag deforms the part itself.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1283\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mark3d.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/image-8-500x362.png\" alt=\"image-8-500x362\" width=\"500\" height=\"362\"><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em>Use the \u2018Update STL\u2019 button in Eiger to use the same slicing settings on an part with updated geometry<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The final design iteration didn\u2019t involve any change in geometry, and in fact used the same STL file, but instead required a change in slicing settings. Maggie liked how the part had come out, but she wanted a stronger part than was printed in the second iteration. She modified the Eiger settings to incorporate fiber in all layers, rather than just a few in the top and bottom of the part, for an overall stronger part.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1285\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mark3d.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/image-9.png\" alt=\"image-9\" width=\"510\" height=\"551\"><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em>Detail of the Kevlar reinforcement in a single layer in the 2D internal view of our Eiger slicing software<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">With the final iteration complete, Maggie printed out another copy and assembled the bag below.
