Throughout much of the 1950s, the Pennsylvania Railroad sought a replacement for its aging P5a electric freight engines, even contemplating dieselization. However, a 1958-59 study concluded that electrification was superior. By then, diesel had dominated, leaving General Electric as the sole electric locomotive manufacturer. For its final new electric engines, the Pennsy chose an upgrade of the 3300 horsepower E33s GE had built for the Virginian Railway. The Pennsy's E44 freighters, identical in size but with 4400 hp, were rectifier engines using Ignitron Rectifiers for AC to DC conversion. The first 60 E44s had water-cooled ignitron tubes, while the last six had air-cooled, solid-state rectifiers. Most early engines were later updated.
